Netizens feel Dhoni still young for the job

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the boy most likely to succeed, but Team India needs a man at the helm. That’s the verdict of Netizens who flocked to participate in the TimesofIndia.com debate and poll on whether the new captain was ready for the job. With Rahul Dravid stepping down as Team India captain, most readers felt that rather than M S Dhoni being entrusted with the task of leading the squad against Australia, a senior cricketer should have been picked. For Dhoni, they said, is not a finished product. Many said even Yuvraj would have been the more sensible choice.

Of the respondents, 59 per cent said no, Dhoni would not make a good captain yet. Seems that the Ranchi batsman, still in his mid-20s, will have to play some more cricket to prove his calibre. Though many readers agree that he's a good cricketer, most of them doubt if the young wicketkeeper is ready for the huge challenge? They support Yuvraj, Sehwag and all-time-favourite Sourav Ganguly for the captaincy, disapproving of Dhoni's selection as they worry that he too, like his predecessors, will fall prey to bad form and the too-much-on-his-plate syndrome.

Murali from Jamaica says, "I don't think Dhoni can be a good captain. He lacks adequate experience and skills. Avadhesh from Dallas also seems to be unhappy with the decision of making him the captain. "The selectors have made a grave mistake and a wrong decision by making Dhoni the captain. It's really a hasty decision. He is not experienced enough to lead Team India," he says. Soumani from Japan has his share of apprehensions. "Dhoni is no 'superman'. He is too young to be the captain. He may turn out to be a 'yes man' for the board politicos, he writes.

A Mukherjee from Canada feels Dhoni lacks the leadership qualities required by a captain. "A captain must motivate his team. That's his primary role. I don't see Dhoni doing that at all," he remarks.

Another reader, Ashish from USA , seems to be unhappy with his recent performances. "No, I do not see him to be good captain because. In the recent in 2 matches, he was not in form. Making an out-of-form player the captain will be self-destruction. The morale of Team India is as it is dwindling. Making him the captain will be a grave mistake. Instead, Yuvraj could have been a better choice," he says.

Harmish from Germany lashes out at the cricket board and says, "I don't know what the problem with BCCI selectors is. Why not make Sourav Ganguly the captain? He is the most successful captain in history of Indian cricket and second most successful batsman of India. Dhoni is way far inexperienced. He needs to learn a lot more before he is ready to take up the responsibility." K Chatterjee from New York agrees with Harmish. Good Luck to Indian cricket for future flop shows, courtesy BCCI's decision," he says.

Sudhakar from Norway points out: "In India, stars are made in a day. How many match-winning innings has Dhoni played for India? Not many. He is compared with Gilchrist, who has played hundreds of match-winning innings but yet he is not a very big star in Australia. This is the reason why Australians are champions. Dhoni has not yet proved his mettle.”

Saurabh from USA , like Ashish, seems to trust Yuvraj more than Dhoni for the post. "Dhoni is not a finished product and captaincy can ruin him. It would be better to make Yuvraj the captain for ODIs and Kumble for Tests," he suggests. S Krishna, also from USA , agrees that we have better options for the post. "Why make Dhoni the captain. Why not Ganguly, Yuvraj or even Sehwag? He has no consistency and does not know the ABC of bowling and batting. I have stopped watching matches since he has been made the captain," he says.

Like many others, Bharat from USA also feels that this is not the right time to make Dhoni the captain. "The pressure he is likely to feel as a captain is likely to affect his batting and wicket keeping," he says.

Vibha Malhotra from Qatar goes on to say that "From whatever I have seen of Dhoni, he is going to be another disaster like Dravid. Playing safe is his motto. He is too young and would find it extremely difficult to assert in a team full of veterans. It will further shorten his career. God forbid if he fails as the captain, he will be discouraged and might call it quits as well.”
