The police pursuit of a suspected stolen car overnight resulted in a two-car crash that killed one of the drivers and closed down Victoria Park Ave. for several hours this morning.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is probing the crash, which killed the 17-year-old driver of a black Acura and sent the 33-year-old driver of a Nissan Maxima to hospital with a broken wrist.

According to the SIU, police were conducting traffic checks on Victoria Park Ave., south of Eglinton Ave., just after midnight when they identified a suspected stolen vehicle.

A police officer in an unmarked car pursued the Acura south on Victoria Park. The Acura collided at Holland Ave. with the northbound Maxima.

The Acura apparently flew through the air at high speed and landed in the front yard of a home on Victoria Park Ave. Neighbours who heard the crash were alarmed and looked out to find the twisted metal of two cars spread across the road. Hours after the crash the car suddenly burst into flames.

The area was reopened to traffic several hours later.

Police cannot comment on the case because it is before the SIU, a civilian agency that investigates the circumstances involving police and civilians, which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death.

The SIU is appealing for witnesses to call the unit at 416-622-1988 or 1-800-787-8529, extension 1988.
