She is always on display-a beautiful jewel in a shop window
where all who pass stop to marvel. At an important social occasion
she will be the most glittering female ornament. Even if she is temporarily
in the wings, she feels like the star of a play waiting for the cue
that summons her to center stage before an admiring audience. She not only has to be important to her mate, she has to be the one and only. That limitation, however, does not apply to her. She wants to be free to roam at will and find her prey. Usually she doesn't have to look far. The prey is all too willing. Leo women are the most popular huntresses in the veldt. She
likes people but is self-centered. She is domineering but dignified,
vain, but kind-a creature of contradictions who sees other people's
problems only in relation to herself. If a love affair becomes too comfortable, she is likely to become lazy and take her bedroom activities too much for granted. As a result, the fire she ignited in a lover often burns out. And without the necessary fuel of his admiration, her own sexual desires slowly fade away. To
keep herself at her best, she needs change-but because of her basically
indolent nature, change is difficult. The result is often a statement
in which she simply stays put. She is only happy when she is the center of attention. If
people don't live up to her standards, she never puts the blame on
herself. If she suffers from an emotional setback, she tends to dramatize,
to play the tragic heroine. It is simulated passion, not deeply felt
anguish. She is striving for effect, not to express genuine emotion.
The truth is that whatever tragedy comes her way is usually self-created.
She believes she is too idealistic, and that is why she's destined for disappointment. The truth is that she tends to love the "wrong" person, or to turn off "Mr. Right" by her unwise and overly demanding lovemaking. She has a great talent for creating her own unhappiness. In money matters she tends to be careless. She likes to spend money-and mainly on herself. A creature who adores luxury, she therefore favors a mate who has the wherewithal to keep her purringly content. Self-indulgence is a marked characteristic. She is a steady patron of hairdressers, buys clothing that is striking and dramatic, adores jewelry and furs. One of her favorite hobbies is to decorate and redecorate her home, with liberal use of the color red. She gives expensive gifts and throws extravagant parties. A great hostess, she will spend lavishly to entertain but will often fail to allow for that unexpected guest. How dare anyone presume to be welcomed unless she has personally invited him? Other women are envious of her because is in a room full of attractive men she will be the cynosure of masculine attention. She draws men toward her effortlessly, perhaps because she assumes it is right and proper that they should do her homage. If she smiles at a man it can be deceptive, however, for it does not always mean she is favorably impressed. She has a persistent, incurable need for admiration, and will employ a flirtatious manner with anyone to insure that she gets it. Her escort of the evening, however, must never for a moment let her remain in doubt as to whether she is the sun in his heaven. That would be absolutely intolerable. Unfair? Of course. But that's the way it is. Any man who wants her is going to have to learn to live with this little idiosyncrasy. She has a fine sense of humor, and the best way to get a point across to her is to put it in a way that will make her laugh. Her laughter tends to be loud, even raucous (a lioness's roar?). When she decides to play the clown herself, she can do it delightfully, for she has a real flair for broad slapstick. When her sign is well aspected, she can be strongly creative. In intellectual matters she is daring, resourceful, and adventurous. In a career she does well, although sometimes she is difficult to work with because of her expectations. She has talent but too often has little to show for it. Anything routine bores her. She will go a long way out of her way to avoid the humdrum. Distance lends enchantment. She years toward the romantic places on travel posters: the Spanish Steps, the Acropolis, the Taj Mahal-each calls with its special siren song. In any of her endeavors, she rejects criticism. And she strongly resists self-criticism also. As one Leo woman friend told me, "Why should I run myself down-when I'm the person with whom I have to spend the rest of my life?" An
exasperated male, trampled underfoot by a domineering Leo mistress,
once complained: "When the meek finally inherit the earth, where
will all the Leos go?"
